Michael Barber is senior director of responsible AI at Highmark Health, where he oversees the AI use policies, guidelines, and governance for all business units. Previously, he served as director of data science R&D, leading a group of 25 data scientists and software developers to establish and expand the analytic capabilities of the enterprise.
With over 25 years of management and analytics experience in multiple industries, Barber has optimized scheduling and delivery processes, implemented lean and just-in-time production methods, and developed high-performing financial models. He has been a long-time member of both the Highmark Health Data Governance and AI Governance Committees and was responsible for development and implementation of the Enterprise Responsible AI Framework.
Barber holds a B.S. in geoscience and an M.S. in applied mathematics. He has worked in retail and industry, served as a sedimentologist and sonar technician aboard research ships, and taught high school and middle school mathematics. He has presented geoscience research and led discussions on responsible AI at national and international conferences.
